The Anglican Tradition of Sung Evening Prayer
Evensong (sung evening prayer) at St. John the Divine is a tiny fragment of something else: it is part of the worship that is offered to God by Christian people every hour of the day and night, in every part of the world.
Evensong has been sung daily in cathedrals for centuries and is offered daily in churches around the world. It is drawn almost entirely from the Bible. The primary purpose of Evensong is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in history and in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its secondary purpose is to evoke from the worshipper a response of praise, penitence, prayer, and obedience.
We invite you to join us for our monthly offering of Evensong and step into the continual stream of worship that is being offered today and will be offered to the end of time. Watch the video below for a taste of what to expect at these beautiful and contemplative worship opportunities.
Upcoming Evensongs are on first Sundays in November, January, February, March, April, May, and June.
(Note - the first Sunday of December is Advent Lessons and Carols)
