About our worship services

St. John the Divine is located inside Houston's "inner loop" on the corner of Westheimer and River Oaks Boulevard, across from Lamar High School. There is parking in the circular drive off River Oaks Boulevard and in the lot on the Westheimer side of our campus. You may also park across Westheimer in the large lot at Lamar High School. We have crossing guards to help you safely cross the street.

Like all Episcopal churches, St. John the Divine worships in the “liturgical style,” which means we follow a relatively common order of service found in our prayer book, The Book of Common Prayer. At every service, you will be greeted by one of our friendly ushers. At the traditional services, your greeter will provide you with a printed 'Order of Service' that contains everything you need to follow along and participate in the service. In the young family and modern worship services, you can follow along with the screens in the front of the room. Feel free to take a seat wherever you are comfortable! Sunday services usually include singing, Bible readings, prayers for ourselves and others, a sermon, and Holy Communion. Services typically last one hour or less.

Yes! We warmly welcome people from other church backgrounds and denominations. The Episcopal Church offers a balanced faith that brings together the best of many Christian traditions. Anyone who desires to follow Christ can worship and fully participate in an Episcopal congregation.

All baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion in The Episcopal Church and at St. John the Divine. If you have not been baptized, you may come forward, cross your arms across your chest, and receive a blessing from the clergy.

After the bread and wine are blessed, the clergy and lay servers come forward to distribute communion to the people. The ushers will let you know when it is your turn. In the church, you may kneel on the cushions or stand at the altar rail and wait to be served. In the Hall Life Center, you will wait in line to approach the servers.

The communion bread is a small wafer (a gluten-free option is available). Place one open palm over the other and hold out your hands. The server will place a wafer in your palm. In the church, another server will come by with the cup of wine (chalice). You have the choice of eating the wafer immediately and taking a sip from the cup of wine, or holding the wafer to dip in a smaller wine cup. Once you have been served, you may return to your place.

Our clergy, staff, and prayer ministry team members are dedicated to praying for whatever needs you may have – large or small. Confidentially. There are multiple ways to request and receive prayer at SJD. Email us at prayer@sjd.org, ask a prayer minister to pray for you on Sundays after communion, or complete a prayer request card at any worship service. Please let us know how we can pray for you today!

More about our prayer ministry

We believe Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ’s body, the Church. We baptize people from infants to adults. To schedule a baptism for yourself or your child, contact Membership Coordinator Marleigh Lowe.

Baptism at St. John the Divine

There are two main paths to membership — baptism and confirmation. If you are already baptized, you can become a member by transferring from another church or requesting to be added as a member.
