As we look ahead with excitement, we will begin providing the congregation with regular updates on the progress of the Shine Forth campus project and share what to expect in the months ahead.
On April 27, we officially filed our construction documents with the City of Houston and formally began the permitting process for the project. Based on current expectations, we anticipate the permitting process will take approximately 8 months, and construction is expected to begin in December 2026.
Once construction begins, the overall process is expected to take approximately 22 months, with completion anticipated in the fall of 2028. We will continue to provide regular updates to the congregation as the timeline and construction sequencing are refined.
The initial 5–6 months of construction will primarily focus on installing the required water retention infrastructure along the Westheimer side of campus. During this phase, parking access along Westheimer will be unavailable, though the remainder of campus facilities and parking areas will remain accessible.
Beginning in approximately May–June 2027, we expect to begin demolition on the portion of campus extending from Sumners Hall to the Hall Life Center wall. At that time, construction of the new modern worship space will commence.
Throughout the construction process, we remain committed to ensuring that the life and ministry of St. John the Divine continue uninterrupted. Access to the Church, Chapel, and Hall Life Center will remain available at all times. Tellepsen, our general contractor, will work closely with us to maintain safe and accessible pathways throughout construction.
While on-campus parking will be significantly impacted during portions of the construction, we are actively working on solutions to ensure adequate parking and accessibility options for parishioners, guests, and families throughout the project.
We know construction projects of this scale require patience and flexibility, and we are deeply grateful for the support, encouragement, and grace this congregation continues to show throughout the process. Shine Forth represents an exciting new chapter in the life of St. John the Divine, and we look forward to continuing to share updates as we move forward together.
Thank you again for your patience, prayers, and ongoing support during this important season in the life of St. John the Divine.
Grace and peace,
David Humphreys
