Spanish Language Ministry

by The Rev. Trent Pettit

“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Ephesians 4:4-6

Answering God’s call for us to be “a light for the city” means, as Billy Graham once said, “smelling like the sheep,” that is, looking like our mission field — the neighbors we’re called to serve. Spanish speakers are already a vital part of our congregation, and with 44% of Houston’s population speaking Spanish—a number that continues to grow—it is essential that St. John the Divine invest in Spanish-language ministry. This means welcoming Spanish-speakers to fully participate in the vibrant life of this church—to expand the family and to grow in our oneness in Christ together. Last year, we launched a Spanish-language Bible study, which continues to thrive. We eagerly anticipate the growth of this community, including the introduction of a worship service fully in Spanish. Together, we hope for this body to truly reflect the diversity of those Christ calls to Himself.

“Attending the Spanish ministry at St. John the Divine has been a deeply personal and spiritual experience, as it allows me to reconnect with the language in which I first learned to speak to God and hear His voice. Though English is my intellectual and emotional language, worshiping and praying in Spanish resonates with my soul in a way that feels both intimate and sacred. This ministry is not just about language; it’s about creating a space where people can encounter the gospel in a way that speaks to their hearts, offering them the opportunity to experience God’s love and truth in the language they understand best. I’m profoundly grateful to St. John’s for embodying what it means to be the church, not merely an organization, but a living, breathing organism empowered by the Holy Spirit to love and to love well! Through open doors and welcoming hearts, this ministry is nourishing and growing a community where faith transcends barriers and every person feels seen, valued, and spiritually at home. This ministry brings life to the individuals it serves and the broader body of Christ, reminding us that the church thrives when it reflects the diversity and beauty of God’s kingdom.

In Christ we are creating a sacred space where God’s love transcends language, cultural differences, and other barriers allowing hearts to encounter the gospel in their own language and feel truly at home.”
