Fall Class Lineup

by Marilyn Gore

This fall, we engaged together as a parish and in small groups with an all-parish study on Growing in His Likeness. We are blessed to offer a slate of adult education opportunities to continue your discipleship journey. Classes begin on Sunday, October 22 at 10:15 am in various locations on campus.

Adult Education - Sunday School
Sundays, October 22 — November 19
10:15 am in the Hall Life Center and by live stream
Taught by lay teachers with small groups

The letter of James in the New Testament is a natural follow-up to our church-wide study on discipleship. Here, James teaches us what it means to be “doers of the word”, living out the good news we have received in Jesus Christ. Join us for this five-week study led by some of our lay Bible teachers!

Discover Membership
Sundays, October 22 — November 12
10:15 am in the Parlor
Taught by
the Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill, rector, and Kim Jameson, director of membership
You are invited to join the Discover Membership Class! This four-week class led by the Rev. Dr. Leigh Spruill and the clergy will look at a brief history of St. John the Divine and the Episcopal church, introduce you to the ministries at SJD, and provide opportunities to meet lay leaders and members. Bishop Andy Doyle will join us on November 19 for Confirmation and reception to follow.

Family Matters: The Bible is Weird and I Don't Know Anything
Sundays, October 22 — December 3 (no class Nov. 5 or 26)
10:15 am in Room L18
Taught by the Rev. Neal McGowan
A lot of us feel clueless when it comes to the Bible. In this four-week series, we will talk through these topics, discuss some good resources and children's Bibles, and have time for Q&A. This class will feature informal and conversational teaching, with interactive discussion and activity. Whether or not you have children, this class is for anyone who feels intimidated by the Bible and how to read it or talk about it.

Lamentations: When You Feel Sad
Sundays, October 22 — November 19
10:15 am in Room 201

Taught by Liz Wilder
When You Feel Sad is a five-week study of the Book of Lamentations, a five-chapter poem that dignifies human grief. Scripture tells us that there is a time to mourn; Lamentations shows us how. Lamentations is sometimes viewed as difficult, yet the words to the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” come directly from this book. A discussion guide with weekly devotional readings will be available in advance.

Lifting the Veil
Sundays, October 22 — December 3 (no class November 26)
10:15 am in Room 210

Taught by Rob Blain
Rob Blain created this six-week study based on poet, priest, and author Malcolm Guite's book Lifting the Veil: Imagination and the Kingdom of God. Using Guite's book and the Bible, this class will explore how Jesus's teachings appeal to our imagination through the parables, the paradoxes of the gospel, and how the Bible has "baptized" the imagination of poets and artists. The format for this class will include lecture and discussion. This class is for those who are interested in the arts, particularly poetry, and how God speaks to us through the arts.
